Gaza belongs to its people

The United States may no longer hold the same position as the global beacon of hope it once did, but its responsibilities as a world power still carry significant weight, particularly when it comes to upholding human rights and international law. These expectations have been challenged repeatedly, but rarely as clearly as they are now with Donald Trump's concerning plan for Gaza. During a joint news conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday, the U.S. president proposed a "long-term ownership" of Gaza. This followed his recent calls for the resettlement of Gaza's 1.2 million residents. While U.S. officials attempted to backtrack on the proposal, suggesting any displacement would be temporary, Trump reaffirmed his stance on Thursday, indicating his intent to move forward with the plan.

This should alarm anyone who holds justice and human rights in high regard. For decades, U.S. foreign policy—despite its inconsistencies—has at least paid lip service to a two-state solution, aiming for the peaceful coexistence of Israel and Palestine. Trump's approach completely disregards that pretense. If enacted, it would not only result in "ethnic cleansing" in Gaza, as the UN chief has rightly condemned, but also set an incredibly dangerous precedent, encouraging stronger nations to resolve territorial conflicts through mass expulsions. It is also a grave insult to the people of Gaza, who have already suffered genocide and destruction at the hands of Israel over the past 15 months. To suggest that those who remain should be uprooted, discarded, and scattered across unwilling countries is nothing short of outrageous.
